Ichomage was the most common hairstyle for men throughout the Edo period. The topknot (sakayaki: the part from the forehead to the top of the head) was shaved, a topknot (tabusa, motodori) was made, and the topknot was folded back towards the top of the head and spread out like a ginkgo leaf (although in many cases it was not spread out). The way it was tied varied depending on the person's status and occupation. Ichomage is also called "chonmage," but the original "chonmage" refers to a shabby topknot worn by old people with little hair, and has a different shape.
