The national costume of Vietnam, the Ao Dai is a long split dress / tunic, worn with silk pants underneath.

Derived from the 18th century outfits of Nguyen nobles, the modern style took on a more form fitting look with influence from the French and urban Hanoi designers. While it was criticized by the Communist Party early in their rule, the Ao Dai is now embraced as cultural heritage and worn regularly as uniforms for workers, teachers and students, and more ornate forms for weddings.

The tight fit of the dress often requires tailoring, but is made to emphasize the bust and curves despite not revealing much skin. Recent trends shorten the length of the top.
