He was a bishop of Myra in the Byzantine empire during the reign of emperor Constantine the Great. He is the patron saint of Christmas, generosity, children, sailors, drowning victims, and among many other things. He is said to have attended the university of Alexandria. There are many stories involving Saint Nicholas that are too numerous to list here.
