Model description
Lana Lang, created by writer Bill Finger and artist John Sikela, first appeared in Superboy #10 in September/October 1950 as the teenage neighbor and romantic interest of Clark Kent in Smallville, Kansas. Introduced shortly after Superboy received his own solo series, she served as a counterpart to Lois Lane, frequently attempting to prove that Clark was secretly Superboy while harboring crushes on both identities. In the Silver Age, Lana gained temporary superpowers on multiple occasions, most notably acquiring a bio-genetic ring from an alien she rescued, allowing her to adopt insect-like traits and become the superheroine Insect Queen, earning reserve membership in the Legion of Super-Heroes.
As an adult in pre-Crisis continuity, Lana moved to Metropolis, becoming a television reporter and a persistent romantic rival to Lois Lane for Superman's affections, often featured in titles like Superman's Girl Friend, Lois Lane. A separate Earth-Two version emerged in the early 1980s, debuting in Superman Family #203, where she gained insect-control powers via a mystical amulet and briefly operated as Insect Queen under villainous influence before aiding Superman heroically. This multiversal distinction ended with Crisis on Infinite Earths.
In post-Crisis and modern continuities, including New Earth, The New 52, and Rebirth, Lana is reestablished as Clark Kent's lifelong childhood friend from Smallville who knows his secret identity, eventually marrying Pete Ross and later divorcing. Significant developments include managing LexCorp briefly, mentoring Supergirl, and gaining superpowers from the dying New 52 Superman's energy release, enabling her to become Superwoman with electromagnetic abilities in her own 2016-2018 series, before relinquishing those powers while retaining her role as a resilient supporting figure in Superman's life.
