Model description

Velma Dinkley is a foundational member of Mystery Inc. in the Scooby-Doo franchise, first appearing in the premiere episode "What a Night for a Knight" of Scooby-Doo, Where Are You!, broadcast on September 13, 1969. Created by Joe Ruby and Ken Spears, with design by Iwao Takamoto for Hanna-Barbera Productions, she was established as the intelligent and analytical teenage detective alongside Fred Jones, Daphne Blake, Shaggy Rogers, and Scooby-Doo. In the original series, Velma functioned as the group's intellectual core, routinely analyzing evidence, decoding clues, and revealing the rational explanations behind apparent supernatural occurrences, often being the first to identify the disguised culprit.

Velma is typically portrayed as a teenage girl with short auburn hair, freckles, and a distinctive outfit featuring a baggy orange turtleneck sweater, a short red pleated skirt, knee-high orange socks, and Mary Jane shoes, accentuated by thick black square glasses that she frequently misplaces. Her personality is marked by exceptional logic, scientific reasoning, sarcasm, and a tendency toward intellectual superiority, expressed through her signature exclamation "Jinkies!" upon discoveries or surprises, as well as the recurring line "My glasses! I can't see without my glasses!" when disoriented. Drawing inspiration from the shrewd character Zelda Gilroy in The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis, Velma represents the archetype of the pragmatic, evidence-driven investigator.

Across the franchise's iterations, Velma has experienced substantial character growth and diversification. In Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated (2010–2013), she received expanded backstory, including romantic involvement with Shaggy and insights into her family life, while emphasizing her role as the most academically accomplished member. Live-action adaptations portrayed by Linda Cardellini in the 2002 and 2004 films underscored her deductive prowess. In recent years, particularly in Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo! (2022), Velma has been depicted with romantic interest in female characters, with official confirmations from producers affirming her lesbian identity, reflecting evolving representation within the series' continuities.
