Thomas Blackshear II (born 1955 in Waco, Texas) is an acclaimed African-American painter and illustrator known for his emotionally powerful and spiritually resonant works. A graduate of the American Academy of Art in Chicago, he began his career with Hallmark Cards before moving into freelance illustration.
Blackshear gained prominence through his designs for U.S. postage stamps, including portraits of jazz legends and African-American heroes for the “Black Heritage” series. His fine art often features angelic and biblical themes, notably in pieces like Forgiven and Watchers in the Night. His work has been exhibited at the Vatican and honored by the Society of Illustrators Hall of Fame.
