Model description

Mead Schaeffer (1898–1980) was a prominent American illustrator known for his dramatic, painterly style and contributions to early 20th-century magazine and book illustration.

Born in Freedom Plains, New York, Schaeffer studied at the Pratt Institute, where he was mentored by Harvey Dunn and Charles Chapman—figures rooted in the Brandywine School tradition. He began his career illustrating adventure novels, including L.P. Wyman’s “Golden Boy” series, and later became a regular contributor to The Saturday Evening Post, Collier’s, and Cosmopolitan. His work often depicted action, romance, and historical scenes with vivid realism and emotional depth.

Schaeffer married fellow artist Elizabeth Wilson Sawyers in 1921, who became his lifelong collaborator and travel companion. His illustrations, celebrated for their storytelling and technical mastery, remain influential in American visual culture.
