青龙寺始建于唐高宗龙朔二年（公元662年）。壁画总体布局精巧、形象构图神奇、点划线描娴熟、施彩赋色高妙而闻名遐迩。

青龙寺的精华在于元、明两朝的壁画，和芮城永乐宫的壁画可以说是一脉相承，十分精美。中殿佛、道、儒三教合一的水陆道场画尤为精妙。
