Wonder Woman from the Elseworlds story Superman: Red Son (Earth-30) first appears in the three-issue prestige format miniseries published by DC Comics in 2003, written by Mark Millar with art by Dave Johnson, Killian Plunkett, and Andrew Robinson. In this alternate reality, Diana of Themyscira serves as an ambassador for the Amazons and forms an alliance with the Soviet-raised Superman, becoming a key supporter of his communist regime. She leaves Paradise Island to aid him in spreading equality worldwide, developing unrequited romantic feelings for Superman, who views her only as a comrade. Wonder Woman assists in governing the Soviet state and participates in diplomatic efforts, representing a shift from her traditional role as a champion of peace to an ally in Superman's authoritarian vision.
A pivotal development occurs when Batman (a resistance fighter in this universe) captures her using her own Lasso of Truth as bait to lure Superman into a trap involving red solar radiation lamps. To save Superman, Diana breaks the lasso—a symbolic act of compromising truth—severing her connection to its power source and causing her to rapidly age, her hair turning white and leaving her frail and broken in spirit. This event marks her disillusionment with Superman's methods, leading her to withdraw from active involvement.
In the story's epilogue set years later, an elderly and bedridden Diana is shown living a monotonous life under care on Themyscira, harboring deep hatred for Superman while the Amazons have isolated themselves from the world of men. Her arc underscores themes of lost ideals and the personal cost of supporting flawed ideologies, portraying her as a tragic figure whose sacrifice ultimately contributes to her emotional and physical decline.
