Snegurochka (Snow Maiden) is a Russian fairy tale and New Year's character, the granddaughter of Ded Moroz (Father Frost), his constant companion and assistant. During the holidays, she acts as an intermediary between children and Ded Moroz.

Traditionally, Snegurochka is depicted as a young girl with long blonde hair braided into a pigtail. She is dressed in a white and blue dress or fur coat with fur trim.

The image of Snegurochka originated in Russian folklore, although the exact date of her appearance is unknown. There are many versions and interpretations of this character. Some folklorists claim that Snegurochka is the embodiment of the goddess of winter, Morana, symbolizing snow and frosty purity.

In literature, the image of Snegurochka was developed thanks to the work of Alexander Ostrovsky. In 1873, the playwright wrote the fairy tale play "Snegurochka," in which Snegurochka is the daughter of Spring and Ded Moroz.

By the mid-20th century, Snegurochka had finally established herself as the granddaughter of Ded Moroz. Her image became an indispensable attribute of New Year's matinees, theatrical performances, and holiday parties.
