Model description
Cyborg Superman, whose true identity is Hank Henshaw, is a recurring supervillain in DC Comics, serving as a dark counterpart to Superman and a significant adversary to characters such as Green Lantern. Created by Dan Jurgens, Henshaw first appeared in The Adventures of Superman #466 (May 1990). Originally an astronaut aboard the LexCorp-sponsored space shuttle Excalibur, Henshaw and his crew—including his wife Terri—were exposed to intense cosmic radiation from a solar flare, resulting in catastrophic mutations. While his crewmates succumbed to their transformations in tragic ways, Henshaw's consciousness survived by transferring into electronic systems and machinery, marking the beginning of his existence as an immortal energy being driven by grief and resentment. He irrationally blamed Superman for the accident, as it coincided with the hero's activities, fueling a deep-seated vendetta.
Returning to Earth after Superman's death in battle with Doomsday, Henshaw constructed a cybernetic body incorporating Kryptonian technology from Superman's birthing matrix, allowing him to mimic the Man of Steel's appearance and powers. He debuted as Cyborg Superman in The Adventures of Superman #500 (June 1993), emerging as one of four claimants to Superman's legacy during the "Reign of the Supermen" storyline. Initially gaining public and governmental support through heroic feats, Henshaw revealed his villainy by allying with Mongul to annihilate Coast City, killing millions of inhabitants and converting the site into Engine City to power Warworld. This devastating act not only exposed his deception but also had profound consequences, contributing to Hal Jordan's psychological breakdown and transformation into Parallax, while Henshaw was ultimately defeated by the resurrected Superman and his allies through exploitation of his cybernetic vulnerabilities.
Henshaw's consciousness has proven extraordinarily resilient, enabling numerous returns despite apparent destructions. He has resurfaced in various forms, including sieging Apokolips alongside Doomsday, leading the Manhunters as their Grandmaster, and joining the Sinestro Corps during the Sinestro Corps War in a quest for true death, which his technopathic immortality denies him. Possessing abilities such as consciousness transference, technomorphing, and Superman-level powers when embodied in his signature cyborg form—enhanced by genius intellect and accumulated knowledge—Henshaw continues to embody themes of technological tyranny and unrelenting hatred, cementing his status as one of Superman's most persistent and psychologically complex foes across multiple DC Comics eras.
