Boiling him down to “’70s Marvel” does Gene Colan a bit of a disservice – the guy had been around since the Timely days, doing backup war stories under Jack Kirby and romance pap under John Romita (Senior!) to ride out the superhero drought of the ‘50s. However, he’s most remembered for his late ‘60s and ‘70s work on Doctor Strange and as the guy who defined the visual look for Tomb of Dracula – two franchises that shared a penchant for twirling cloaks, mist and smoke effects, horrors from beyond, and just a touch of impressionism.
…and inky shadows. Deep, black, inky shadows. So his work in that time period is what this LORA focuses on.
While the good doctor, the king of the vampires, and Blade (in his delightful original green outfit!) are all tagged in the training data, this is a general style LORA, and the actual trademarked characters tend to come out off-model (see sample pics). At low strengths this model makes for a good mixer if you just want to add a slight touch of ink and shift your characters’ faces away from anime and closer to the western comics square-jaw style; at very high strengths everyone becomes a black-ink-tinted ghoul.
Usage:
· Str 1.0, genecolan: A touch of western comics, though to be honest it could be any of a dozen journeyman artists of the post-romance-boom period.
· Str 1.35, genecolan, western_comics_\(style\), hatching_\(texture\), strong shadows, inks_\(medium\): Now it looks like a comic Gene Colan definitely drew circa 1973.
· Str 1.5 genecolan, western_comics_\(style\), hatching_\(texture\), strong shadows, inks_\(medium\): We’re in the Tomb of Dracula, and everything is drenched in black ink! Also works well with monochrome, greyscale or painting_\(medium\), acrylic_paint_\(medium\) if those styles are to your taste.
