Originating in the United States, Cheerleading is an athletic performance team with stunts including tumbling, flips, lifts and throws, in addition to chants and coordinated dance routines.

Primarily a female sport today, it originally started as an all male activity in American colleges in the late 1800's alongside the formation of the game of American Football. In 1949, former Lawrence Herkimer (creator of the Herkie jump and pompom) popularized the sport nationwide and its growth among women with his cheerleading camps and focus on visual appeal on television.

Cheerleading teams today compete in their own competitions, as well as performing crowd work professionally for basketball and football teams. In terms of danger, it is ranked among the highest in sports for catastrophic injury (the highest for girls), including concussions, broken bones & ligaments, internal organ injury and paralysis. While the sport is growing in other countries, they tend to focus more on sex appeal and crowd work than gymnastics and stunts.
