Granny Goodness (DC Comics | Apokolips | New Gods)

Details

Model description

Granny Goodness is a supervillain in DC Comics, created by Jack Kirby as part of his Fourth World saga. She first appeared in Mister Miracle #2 (May–June 1971). A New God from the dystopian planet Apokolips, she serves as one of Darkseid's most devoted lieutenants, renowned for her sadistic demeanor concealed behind a facade of grandmotherly benevolence. Her appearance, reportedly modeled after comedian Phyllis Diller, contrasts sharply with her ruthless nature, as she oversees the brutal indoctrination of recruits into Darkseid's forces.

Originally a member of Apokolips' oppressed "Lowlies" class, Granny Goodness was separated from her parents at a young age and trained rigorously to become one of Darkseid's elite "Hounds." She earned her position through demonstrations of unyielding loyalty and cruelty, including a pivotal incident involving her trained attack dog, Mercy, which impressed Darkseid sufficiently to entrust her with managing his training facilities. Operating the infamous Orphanage—a facility that parodies child care through torture, brainwashing, and psychological manipulation—she transforms innocent children into fanatical warriors. Granny also commands the Female Furies, an elite group of female combatants, and was tasked with raising Scott Free, Highfather's son exchanged in a peace treaty, though he ultimately escaped her grasp to become Mister Miracle.

Over the decades, Granny Goodness has featured in key storylines that underscore her strategic cunning and resilience. Notable developments include impersonating the goddess Athena during Amazons Attack! to incite conflict and recruit Amazons, imprisoning Olympian gods in events tied to Countdown to Final Crisis, and possessing bodies such as the Alpha Lantern Kraken during Final Crisis to advance Darkseid's schemes. As a New God, she possesses superhuman strength, durability, stamina, immortality, and expertise in tactics and combat, solidifying her role as a persistent threat in the cosmic struggles of the DC Universe.
