En Sabah Nur, known as Apocalypse, is an ancient and immensely powerful mutant supervillain in Marvel Comics, embodying the Darwinian philosophy of survival of the fittest. Created by writer Louise Simonson and artist Jackson Guice, the character first appeared unnamed in Marvel Graphic Novel #17 (July 1985) and made his full debut in X-Factor #5 (June 1986). Born thousands of years ago in ancient Egypt as one of the earliest mutants, En Sabah Nur was abandoned at birth due to his distinctive gray skin and blue markings. Rescued and raised by nomadic raiders led by Baal, he embraced a ruthless ideology of strength prevailing over weakness, eventually discovering and integrating advanced Celestial technology that amplified his abilities and granted him near-immortality.

Apocalypse possesses a vast array of mutant powers, including superhuman strength, durability, energy absorption and projection, molecular manipulation for shapeshifting and size alteration, telekinesis, telepathy, and teleportation, further enhanced by his Celestial armor and regenerative capabilities. He frequently recruits and transforms powerful mutants into his Four Horsemen—typically embodying War, Famine, Pestilence, and Death—to serve his conquests. As a recurring archenemy of the X-Men and X-Factor, Apocalypse views conflict as a means to evolve mutantkind, often orchestrating large-scale threats to cull the weak and establish his dominion.

Over the decades, Apocalypse has featured in pivotal storylines that have shaped Marvel's mutant narrative, including the recruitment of Archangel as Death in the late 1980s X-Factor arcs and the alternate-reality "Age of Apocalypse" crossover (1995–1996), where he conquered much of the world following Professor Xavier's death. Subsequent developments revealed deeper historical ties, such as his encounters with time-travelers like Kang the Conqueror and his enhancement by Celestial artifacts. In the Krakoa era beginning with House of X (2019), his backstory expanded to include ancient heroism on the island of Okkara, leading to complex alliances with mutants and a nuanced portrayal beyond pure antagonism, while he remains a symbol of existential threat in the Marvel Universe.
