Cyclops (Marvel Comics | X-Men | Rule 63)

Scott Summers, known as Cyclops, is a foundational mutant superhero in Marvel Comics and the longtime field leader of the X-Men. Created by writer Stan Lee and artist Jack Kirby, he made his debut in The X-Men #1 (September 1963) as one of the original five members recruited by Professor Charles Xavier to form the team. Orphaned after a plane crash that separated him from his brother Alex (later Havok), Summers suffered a head injury that impaired his ability to control his emerging mutant powers. Raised in an orphanage and briefly manipulated by the villain Mr. Sinister, he was eventually located by Xavier, who provided him with a ruby quartz visor to contain his optic blasts and offered him purpose as Cyclops.

Cyclops possesses the mutant ability to project powerful concussive beams of ruby-colored energy from his eyes, drawn from an extradimensional source and fueled by ambient solar energy absorbed through his body. He cannot voluntarily shut off these blasts, requiring specialized ruby quartz lenses or his visor for control, which also serves as a tactical tool for adjusting beam intensity. A disciplined strategist and tactician, Cyclops excels in leadership, often prioritizing team cohesion and mission objectives over personal desires. His reserved demeanor and unwavering commitment to Xavier's dream of human-mutant coexistence have defined him as the X-Men's steadfast commander across generations.

Cyclops has undergone profound character evolution, marked by personal tragedies and ideological shifts. His long-term romance with Jean Grey culminated in marriage, but was repeatedly disrupted by events such as the Phoenix Force possession, her apparent deaths, and the revelation of Madelyne Pryor as her clone. Following Jean's death in New Avengers #27 (2006), he entered a controversial psychic affair and later relationship with Emma Frost. Major turning points include leading the X-Men through crises like the Mutant Massacre and House of M, his schism with Wolverine over training young mutants, temporary possession by the Phoenix Force during Avengers vs. X-Men (2012)—resulting in Xavier's death and his own imprisonment—and his resurrection in the Krakoa era beginning with House of X (2019), where he assumed a central command role in the new mutant nation while grappling with his complex legacy.
