1940年、白ロシア系の商人が上海に「喬奇照相館」という店をオープンし、それが人民照相館の前身となった。

当時、それは上海ハパイ文化の代表の一つとして知られ、多くのスターが記念写真を撮るためにここを訪れた。当時上海で大流行した俳優の趙丹、作家の巴金、京剧の大師である梅葆玖が、この店で肖像写真を撮影した。

1959年以降、この店は「人民照相館」と改名され、経営形態は民間から公私合弁、最終的には国営へと移行した。計画経済時代には、写真館にも格付けがあり、人民照相館は「特級」に属しており、価格は比較的高かった。写真を撮ること自体が贅沢とされていた当時、人民照相館は上海市民の心に深く刻まれた精神的ランドマークの一つとなり、「人民照相館で写真を撮る」ことは多くの市民の憧れだった。

HISTORY

In 1940, a White Russian businessman established a shop in Shanghai named Qiaojie Photographic Studio, which later became known as the People's Photographic Studio, its predecessor.

At that time, it was one of the representatives of Shanghai Haipai culture, attracting numerous celebrities who frequented the studio for portrait photography. Renowned actors like Zhao Dan, celebrated authors such as Ba Jin, and Peking Opera masters including Mei Baojiu all had their portraits taken at this very place.

After 1959, the studio underwent a name change to "The People's Photographic Studio," transforming from private ownership to a joint public-private enterprise, and eventually becoming state-owned. During the planned economy era, photographic studios were categorized into different tiers, with the People's Photographic Studio being classified as 'Top Grade,' resulting in relatively higher prices. In those times when taking photographs was still considered a luxury, the studio held a special status in the hearts of Shanghai residents as a spiritual landmark; visiting the People's Photographic Studio for a photo session was a cherished aspiration for many citizens.

The unique aspect of its 'Top Grade' distinction lay in the pioneering high- and low-key shooting techniques created by Gu Yuxing, the first-generation photographer at the People's Photographic Studio. Low-key photographs featured strong contrasts and rich colors, resembling an oil painting with a profound sense of narrative. High-key photographs, on the other hand, were bright and gave off a sketch-like quality, making ordinary people look like movie stars in the images.

Today, despite several relocations, the People's Photographic Studio maintains its distinct old-Shanghai ambiance. The walls are adorned with artistic portrait photographs that have accumulated charm over time.

Throughout its 83-year history, the People's Photographic Studio has borne witness to the evolution of fashion in the magic metropolis, chronicled changes in the lives of Shanghai residents, and experienced its own strategic transformations and repositioning. Regardless of how the studio may develop in the future, there is no denying that the silent images held in people's hands serve as testimonials to the laughter and joy that genuinely existed within the walls of this historic studio.
