Hope Summers (Marvel Comics | X-Men)

Hope Summers first appeared in X-Men (Vol. 2) #205 in 2007, created by writer Mike Carey and artist Chris Bachalo, as part of the "Messiah Complex" storyline. She is the first mutant born after the Decimation event, known as M-Day, when Scarlet Witch depowered the vast majority of the world's mutants. Born in Cooperstown, Alaska, to firefighter Louise Spalding—impregnated through the influence of the Phoenix Force—Hope's emergence triggered a massive telepathic shockwave that destroyed the X-Men's Cerebra unit. Her birth immediately attracted hostile forces, including the Purifiers and Marauders, who sought to eliminate or capture her, while the X-Men aimed to protect her. Cable, recognizing her as a prophesied messiah figure destined to save both mutantkind and humanity, rescued the infant Hope and fled into the future to raise and safeguard her from pursuers like Bishop.

Raised by Cable in a dystopian future timeline, Hope was trained rigorously in combat, survival tactics, weaponry, strategy, and gymnastics, adopting his surname in honor of his late wife. Her omega-level mutant abilities gradually manifested, centered on the psychic mimicry and manipulation of other mutants' powers in proximity—allowing her to duplicate abilities at full potency, amplify or stabilize them, synchronize multiple powers, detect mutant signatures, and even activate latent mutations. Upon returning to the present during the "Second Coming" storyline, Hope grieved Cable's sacrificial death but harnessed her rage to mimic the powers of nearby X-Men, single-handedly defeating Bastion and his forces. Her presence activated the "Lights," a group of five new young mutants whose unstable powers she stabilized, establishing her role as a leader and mentor while integrating into the X-Men on Utopia.

Hope's significance escalated in "Avengers vs. X-Men," where she became the intended host for the approaching Phoenix Force. After the Force fragmented among the "Phoenix Five," leading to global conflict and corruption, Hope—trained briefly by Spider-Man and aided by Scarlet Witch—defeated the Dark Phoenix-possessed Cyclops and fully merged with the entity as the White Phoenix. She then used its power to reverse the effects of M-Day, reigniting mutant births worldwide. In subsequent years, Hope led a new X-Force team alongside a resurrected Cable, sought normalcy amid ongoing threats, and, during the Krakoa era, became a crucial member of "The Five," a group synchronizing powers to resurrect deceased mutants. Her arc culminated in a sacrificial act to rebirth the Phoenix Force, with her consciousness persisting in the White Hot Room to support resurrection protocols and Jean Grey.
