Model description
Artemis of Bana-Mighdall is a fierce Amazon warrior from the splinter tribe of Bana-Mighdall, an Egyptian-based group that separated from the main Amazons led by Queen Hippolyta centuries ago, losing their immortality and adopting a more militaristic, survival-oriented culture. Created by writer William Messner-Loebs and artist Mike Deodato Jr., she made her debut in Wonder Woman (vol. 2) #90 in September 1994. Raised in poverty and trained rigorously in combat from childhood, Artemis emerged as the tribe's Shim'Tar, or champion warrior, embodying a pragmatic and aggressive ethos distinct from the Themysciran Amazons' ideals of peace and diplomacy.
A pivotal development occurred when Artemis entered and won a contested tournament to select a new Wonder Woman, defeating Diana Prince and briefly assuming the title with enhanced artifacts such as the Gauntlets of Atlas for increased strength and the Sandals of Hermes for flight and speed. Her tenure as Wonder Woman was marked by controversy due to her ruthless methods in combating crime in cities like Boston, leading to public backlash and strained relations with heroes like Batman. This period culminated in her death during a battle against the demonic White Magician, fulfilling a prophecy of Wonder Woman's demise and sending her soul to the underworld.
Following her resurrection, Artemis returned to the living world, initially operating under the alias Requiem and later reclaiming her role within Amazon society, including serving as Shim'Tar during civil strife on Themyscira and aiding in diplomatic efforts. In the Rebirth continuity, beginning prominently in 2016, she formed an unlikely alliance with Red Hood and Bizarro as part of the Outlaws, pursuing artifacts like the Bow of Ra while grappling with tribal loyalties, romantic tensions, and ongoing rivalries with Diana and other Amazons, solidifying her as a complex anti-heroine navigating redemption and identity.
