Dawn Granger, better known as Dove, is a prominent superheroine in DC Comics, embodying the avatar of peace as part of the Hawk and Dove duo. She first appeared in Hawk and Dove #1 (October 1988), created by writers Barbara and Karl Kesel with artwork by Rob Liefeld. Succeeding the original Dove, Don Hall—who died during the Crisis on Infinite Earths event—Dawn was selected by the Lords of Order and Chaos to restore balance. Her origin traces to a moment of crisis in London, where, facing danger alongside her mother during a terrorist incident, she instinctively uttered "Dove" and transformed, gaining mystical powers tied to harmony and order.
As Dove, Dawn possesses enhanced physical abilities, including superhuman strength, agility, durability, flight, and a precognitive danger sense that allows her to anticipate threats and perceive truths intuitively. She initially partnered with Hank Hall, the chaotic and aggressive Hawk, forming a dynamic partnership that contrasted war with peace. This relationship drove many early stories, as Dawn's calm demeanor and diplomatic approach often tempered Hank's impulsiveness, enabling them to combat threats ranging from street-level crime to supernatural forces.
Over the years, Dawn experienced significant character developments, including the tragic Armageddon 2001 storyline, where Hank's corruption led him to become the villain Monarch, resulting in Dawn's death (later reversed in subsequent continuities). Her sister, Holly Granger, later assumed avian powers, briefly becoming a new Hawk or Dove in events like Blackest Night and Brightest Day. Through DC's various reboots, such as The New 52 and beyond, Dawn has remained a symbol of peace, occasionally joining teams like the Titans and exploring complex ties with entities like Deadman, while consistently advocating non-violent resolution amid chaos.
